University is finished

Quick update on here -

My 1st year is over. Currently i have a good feeling about my grades, however that might change when it comes nearer to the results day!

I gave my final presentation for IDAT106 yesterday and got some positive feedback from Shaun Murray.

Between now and the date we return for our 2nd year i have a couple tasks that im going to do in order to progress greatly next year. They are:-

-Redesign website
-Move all my previous blog work from this website to new blog (http://www.garrybarter.com)
-Develop my final IDAT106 work further, including a 3d version.
-Read some Science Fiction & other recommended books by Shaun Murray.
-Read both books about Flash (become a flash master!;))

There are some other things that i need to do but i can't really be bothered to write them up.

As i mentioned above i am in the progress of removing all of this years work from this website onto the new site. I will update this site again when i have moved stuff over.

What i previously studied

As you can see from the other articles on this blog, we studied the Brentonside Bus Station.

We chose this location because it was a central figure in Plymouth and there are many different types of people who use the services the station offers.

What we found out

Whilst we were studying the bus station we found that there was a very distinctive path that ran through the station. This path was being used by the public to move through the station, from one side to the other. We also found out about all the different types of people that used the station. One of the other main observations we made was that even with the high volume of people using the station there still wasn't very much interaction.

What i wanted to intervene?

After finding out that there was a very distinctive movement path that the public use to get through the bus station, i wanted to create a small object that would obstruct the public.

Another main thing that i wanted to explore was the possibility of creating something additional that would provide an ineteraction between the members of the public.

I decided that as well as intervening with peoples movement i also want to create something that would create an interaction.

Ideas for intervention

After figuring out what i wanted to achieve with this project i decided to move onto developing some ideas.

My first idea was to gather 5 or 6 people to stand in a line obstructing the public. This would create the intervention of effecting the movement paths of the public. To develop the idea further i would have some t-shirts printed with a slogan on the front that would provide interaction between the public and the people wearing the shirts. After a bit more planning this idea i realised that this idea would not be practical and may not produce the results i wanted, so i moved onto developing another idea.

An early sketch of this idea.

My second idea was to adapt my 1st idea. Instead of people standing in a straight line being still, i would have the people start at the end of the main corridor and walk up together in a line. All of them asking whoever is in front of the them how they are. This would also obstruct the people whilst at the same time creating a interaction.

In the end i decided that this idea may not provide the best results again.

What i chose to do

In the end my final idea was an adaptation of the first idea. Instead of using people with t-shirts on i decided to use a sign with a message printed on it.

The message will be "Why Not Smile?". I decided on this message because i feel it will create a reaction without coming across too heavy or offending.

The main reason i chose to use a sign instead of people was because it was easy to move and it is the perfect size for obstructing someones movement path. You can still get past it but you do have to adjust the path.

This way of creating the intervention should help me achieve the results i want.

How i put it together

My sign was quite easy to create.

The main problem was where i was going to get a sign from. Originally i considered stealing a sign from outside a store or from some road works. After some unsuccessful late-night skirmishes, i found one in the bin room of my university halls.

Once i had the sign all i had to do is print off some A4 sheets of paper and then stick them to the front of the sign.

Where I filmed?

Obviously i filmed in the bus station, however in this post i will show exactly where i filmed and why i chose to film there.

To begin with i started filming by the stairs nearest to Drake Circus. This gave me a nice flow of people coming in from town.

The red block is the sign and the yellow dot is
the where the camera was.

After filming here i moved onto the corridor at the back of the bus station. Putting the sign in there meant that no matter where the people walked they would have to see the sign.

The next area was the open area on the staples side of the bus station. Filming here allowed me to show my sign to a lot of people coming in from work and provided some of the better results.

My final location was at the front of the station, this area is where the people que to get on their buses. This allowed me to put the sign in the most vital and busiest place in the bus station.

Final product

This links is to the video results of my intervention. It includes a video of all of the reactions whilst i was down there.

Final Conclusion

Whilst i was down at the bus station filming it didn't seem that there was much reaction to the sign apart from the initial curiosity caused by a sign being in a persons way.

However after viewing all of the footage a lot closely i have seen that quite a lot of people reacted to the sign in the way i wanted. Obviously there were quite a few members of the public that just ignored the sign. Also there were a few people that saw that we were filming and purposely looked away.

I was quite happy with the results, however if i were to make any changes to the final results then it would of been nice to get down to the bus station throughout the day, not just in the afternoon. If i was to do this though, the final video would have had to been longer than just 5 minutes.

Thanks for viewing my intervention.
